Cuban Son was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO this December, during the twentieth session of the Intergovernmental Committee held in New Delhi, India.
The nomination was supported by institutions such as the Cuban Institute of Music, the National Council of Houses of Culture, and the Center for Research and Development of Cuban Music.

The decision seeks to preserve and promote a musical and dance tradition that originated in eastern Cuba. This recognition reflects the vitality of son as a cultural expression, its international influence, and its role in Cuban and Afro-Caribbean identity.
According to Prensa Latina, the president of the National Council of Cultural Heritage, Sonia Pérez, stated that the inscription is a tribute to the creativity and joy of the Cuban people, as well as strengthening intergenerational transmission and cultural cooperation.
Cuban son was declared a National Cultural Heritage in 2012, and now joins other expressions recognized by UNESCO such as rumba, punto cubano, tumba francesa, parrandas and bolero.
