The art-book Antes del silencio (Before the Silence) by writer Rafael Mosqueda and manufactured by Cuadernos Papiro publishing house, marks the starting point of exports processed by the Cuban Fund for Cultural Assets (FCBC) in Holguín through the New Business Group, in charge of promoting forms of economic management for artisans and artists associated with this entity.

Manuel Arias Silveira, director of Cuadernos Papiro and the Manufactured Paper Workshop, said to the ACN news agency that this exportable proposal will open a portfolio of new products to the international market, including artisan paper, agendas, postcards, gift bags and other utilitarian objects, reaching more audiences and clients and promoting this attractive work carried out on the island.

So far, 30 copies of Antes del silencio, which is a collection of poems illustrationed and designed by the Holguín visual artist José Emilio Leyva Azze, have been exported at the request of the US label Ediciones Nuevos Mundos, by Soledad Pagliuca, said Arias Silveira.

With the recent export of this book completely handmade, including the paper, illustrations and binding, using mainly the technique of engraving, embroidery and collage, the small company reported around 600 USD, which will be used to purchase essential materials in the preparation of the texts and other articles manufactured by the publishing house.

Founded in 1994 by plastic artists, the Holguín Manufactured Paper Workshop is a Cuban company that works with this product, basically with natural fibers such as banana, tobacco, corn and garlic, among others, which are extracted from a one, then are cold pressed and air dried, Silveira explained.

The papers they produce are characterized by their natural colors and originality, for which they are used in different printing processes, plastic arts, graphic design, crafts and decorative items, also working on orders and shipments to the interior and exterior of the country.

Cuadernos Papiro was created in 2001 as a unique publishing house of its kind in the country, which produces art books on manufactured paper, illustrated with hand-carved engravings by Cuban artists of recognized prestige in the country.

The publishing house, where resides the Printing Museum in Holguín, has published the works of great authors such as José Martí, Miguel de Cervantes, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Virgilio Piñera, José Lezama Lima, Dulce María Loynaz, Gastón Baquero and Nicolás Guillén; as well as the Holguín writers Lourdes González, Jorge Hidalgo, Ronel González, José Luis Serrano and Moisés Mayán.
