The eastern city of Guantanamo will continue preparations this Monday for the 7th International Seminar for Peace and for the Abolition of Foreign Military Bases of the United States and the Atlantic Alliance.
The event, organized by the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples and the World Peace Council, will take place from May 4th through the 6th.
According to the Foreign Ministry's website, the event will bring together academics, union leaders, anti-war activists and friends of the country to demand an end to the arms race being developed by the United States and its North Atlantic Treaty Organization allies.
The forum will also be a space for denunciation and exchange of knowledge and experiences that will help to join forces in favor of world peace and for the suppression of the arbitrary bases.
In addition, the delegates will reiterate the importance and validity of the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace, approved by the heads of state and government of the region meeting in Havana in January 2014, the source indicated. The venue of the seminar has a special significance, since Washington has maintained a naval base in Guantanamo for 119 years against the will of the Cuban people and government.
It was pointed out that the U.S. created a prison there for alleged terrorism suspects, who are victims of torture and deprived of their rights.
According to lawyer Thomas B Wilner, the United States violates the law by keeping its naval base in Caribbean territory, since it has prisoners without criminal charges and lacks justified reasons to maintain a deployment of guards in that area.
