cuentapropistas hgSome 605,000 people were self employed in Cuba in late May 2019, the Minister of Labor and Social Security (MTSS), Margarita Gonzalez, told MPs on Tuesday.
 
Speaking in the debate on the behavior of this non-state form of employment (private entrepreneurship), which has grown after the process of economic updating, Gonzalez said that women make up 35 percent of them and young people, 32 percent.
 
Havana (capital), Matanzas, Villa Clara, Camaguey, Holguin and Santiago de Cuba have the highest number of people working in this modality with 65 percentage points.
 
In the analysis of the Economic Commission of the Cuban parliament, the MP referred that food production and sale, passenger transport and cargo and housing, room or space renters remain the most representative activities.
 
MTSS data reflect some 128 activities licensed for self-employment in Cuba.
 
Since this Monday, the 10 permanent commissions of the National Assembly of People's Power, assembled in the Havana Convention Center, are analyzing essential issues for the progress in Cuba. /PL
