With his poem "Lengua bárbara", poet Ronel González has won the 2026 Nosside World Poetry Prize, in its 41st edition.

The award, presented by the Bosio Center for Studies in Reggio Calabria, and named after the celebrated poet Nosside of Locris, from 3rd-century BCE Greece, granted five overall prizes. The Spanish-language prize went to González, who dedicated his poem to one of the many Palestinian girls, victims of the Israeli genocide.

Other Cubans received honorable mentions, while the poet Mariana Enriqueta Pérez, from Santa Clara, received one of the collateral prizes.

“Actually, when I finished the poem, I felt that the subject matter truly surpassed my writing abilities. A topic as dramatic and complex as the massacre of the Palestinian people truly exceeds any artistic possibility. I experienced joy upon finishing the writing because I had managed to capture some of the emotion that gave rise to it; however, reality surpasses creation,” Ronel González told Granma.

In 2024, Pasquale Amato, founding president of the Nósside Prize, visited Radio Enciclopedia and gave an interview to journalist Indira Pavot Sánchez. He explained that, with its linguistic diversity and multimedia approach, the project champions a poetic imagination without borders, a culture of dialogue, mutual respect for traditions and history, and the defense of minority and local languages.

He explained that the prize is open to all the world's languages, and that this is its defining characteristic, an important one with a universal dimension and a structure that allows everyone to participate. (Source: Granma)
