Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Cuban counterpart, Bruno Rodriguez, called on Wednesday for dialogue with the United States, which they asked to renounce its plans to blockade the Caribbean island.
Russia urges the U.S. to act sensibly and to desist from the maritime and military blockade of Cuba, the Russian foreign minister said in his meeting with the Cuban Foreign Minister
Russia will continue to provide support to Cuba in the defense of its security, the Russian foreign minister assures.
"We are ready for a respectful dialogue on equal terms with any country," Rodriguez said at the beginning of his meeting with Lavrov in Moscow.
The Cuban foreign minister assured that despite pressure from Washington, Havana will defend its sovereignty and independence and maintain its "unalterable" course.
Rodriguez criticized the White House's policy in relation to the island, which has been declared a threat to U.S. security, and also with regard to other countries, which "threatens multilateralism" and the United Nations.
As for relations with Russia, he described them as "historic, fraternal, special and strategic" and was convinced that cooperation will continue "above any circumstances" and the objectives set will be achieved.
Lavrov, for his part, said that Russia, along with most members of the international community, calls on the United States to "show common sense" and "refrain from plans to blockade the Island of Freedom."
"I would like to reiterate that the actions of the United States, which issued a special decree declaring Cuba a threat, are absolutely unacceptable," the head of Russian diplomacy said.
He regretted that the same decree stipulated that this threat was aggravated by Cuba's cooperation with Russia, "which is described in said decree as a hostile and malicious state."
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment, Oscar Pèrez-Oliva Fraga, is also part of the Cuban delegation. (Source : Cubadebate)
