Cuban health experts get ready to introduce, for the first time in the country, a vaccine against the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).

In a first stage, the vaccine will be administered to some 68 thousand 524 nine-year-old girls on a program stipulating a 0.5 milliliter intramuscular dose and two doses for girls diagnosed with any immune-deficient condition, said doctor Lena Lopez, who leads the Cuban Immunization Program, cited by PL news agency.

The vaccination coverage equals of is above 95 percent and aims at achieving the elimination of cervical-uterine cancer—related to HPV—with less than four cases in every 100 thousand women annually, the doctor noted.

The introduction in Cuba of the HPV vaccine was a result of joint efforts by the World Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, the Cuban Public Health Ministry and the Pan-Am and World Health organizations, according to information released at a seminar on the control of cervical-uterine cancer, held in late January.
