Taymara Oropesa wins bronze in Santo Domingo tournament

Holguín athlete Taymara Oropesa Pupo won two bronze medals, both the singles and mixed doubles competitions, at the 14th Santo Domingo Open Tournament in the Dominican Republic.

In the singles, Oropesa defeated Dominican Emely Benítez in the first round by scores of 21-7 and 21-10. In the round of 16, she also defeated Argentine Iona Gualdi in straight sets, with scores of 21-12 and 21-15.

In the quarterfinals, she defeated local Nairoby Abigail Jiménez, defeating the Dominican in three sets by scores of 21-8, 16-21, and 21-13. In the semifinals she fell in two sets to American Disha Gupta, 21-13 and 21-15.

In the mixed doubles, she also took third place with her partner Roberto Carlos Herrera. The top Cuban pair dominated Víctor Ovalles and Michelle Guzmán in their first match, with sets of 21-13 and 21-18.

In the quarterfinals, they defeated another local pair, Yonatan Linarez and Nairoby Abigail Jiménez, with straight sets of 21-10 and 21-15. In the semifinals, they fell in three sets to Peruvians Charles Fouyn and Katie Watson. The Cubans initially lost the first set 21-19, but recovered in the second set with a 21-9 victory, and in the tiebreak, they lost 21-10 to finish in third place.

This event awarded points toward the world ranking, the main means of qualifying for the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games. Currently, Taymara Oropesa is ranked 446th with a total of 2,090 points.
