The Central American and Caribbean Games will begin next Friday in the Jorge “El Mágico” González stadium, in the capital of El Salvador.
The opening stage has a capacity for more than 30,000 spectators, who will see the delegations from 27 countries parade, with around 5,000 participants, for a sporting event that has 54 disciplines in its competitive program.
Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic, will be a sub-host and will host seven sports, including canoeing, field hockey and taekwondo.
The Games will run until July 8. Two events will begin before the opening date of June 23: table tennis and beach volleyball.
Cuba will participate with 504 athletes in 36 disciplines, since there are events that were eliminated for not having the minimum required number of attendees.
Two of the stars of Cuban sport will be the standard bearers of the Cuban delegation, boxer Julio César La Cruz and judoka Idalys Ortiz.
Cuba aspires to achieve between 70 and 80 gold medals to dispute the second place by nations to Colombia.
Mexico is the favorite for the first place, which it achieved in the previous edition in Barranquilla-2018.
Among the disciplines that should bring the most titles to Cuba are boxing, athletics, wrestling, judo, fencing and taekwondo.
Baseball will try to regain the crown.
In San Salvador-2023, 142 places will be awarded in 13 sports for the Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile, next October.
