Pope Francis has spoken out on Thursday against new forms of bondage that enslave millions of men, women, youth and children.
The Supreme Pontiff referred to the dispossessed and their suffering in a message on the occasion of the 3rd World Day of the Poor, a Roman Catholic observance established by Pope Francis in 2017 to foster Christians´ rejection of culture of exclusion and waste.
In the article entitled 'The hope of the poor shall not perish forever', Pope Francis pointed out that there are families forced to leave their homeland to seek a living elsewhere; orphans who have lost their parents or were violently torn from them by brutal means of exploitation.
He also referred to young people seeking professional fulfillment but prevented from employment by shortsighted economic policies; victims of different kinds of violence, from prostitution to drugs, and humiliated in the depths of their being.
How to forget, he asked, those millions of immigrants who fall victim to any number of concealed interests, so often exploited for political ends and are denied solidarity and equality. And all the homeless and ostracized persons who roam the streets of our cities.
In this regard, he said that poor people are forced to work endless hours under scorching sun to reap the seasoning fruits, but they are rewarded with a laughable payment. They have no job security or human conditions that allow them to feel equal to others. In this World Day, Pope Francis stressed that the commitment of Christians must pervade the assistance initiatives which 'even though they are commendable and necessary, must tend to increase in each one the full attention' to each person in difficulty. / PL
