A teaching project promoted by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) fosters environmental education in the province of Holguín by incorporating ecological training into academic programs.

This initiative aims to strengthen environmental awareness from school and encourage students’ active participation in protecting the environment.

The proposal is part of Task Life Program (Tarea Vida), the Cuban state plan to confront climate change, and aligns with the third improvement of the national education system. It also contributes to the national disaster risk reduction strategy, increasing communities’ perception and preparedness for natural hazards.

The project, titled “Education, child leadership, inclusion and gender for multi-risk disaster reduction and resilience to climate change”, addressed issues related to forest fires and tropical cyclones, especially in schools located near vulnerable areas. It was developed in three stages—training, socialization, and implementation—and concluded with a workshop involving Civil Defense specialists.

Throughout its implementation, environmental topics were integrated into subjects such as Natural Sciences, Geography, Mathematics, and The World We Live In through practical and creative activities.

Multi-risk maps were also created to identify the main environmental challenges in each community. After its successful execution in Holguín, Granma, Santiago de Cuba, and Guantánamo, the program will be extended in 2026 to schools in central and western Cuba.
