Media Campaign against Cuba Fails in Brazil

Despite the interest of some media in tainting the image of Cuba in Brazil, especially in light of the Brazilian president’s visit of the island, many of the country's leading figures have denied that campaign and reaffirmed their respect for the Cuban Revolution.

The daily newspaper, Globo, published statements by Brazilian Foreign Minister Antonio Patriota, speaking in Davos. "Foreign Minister, Antonio Patriota, made it clear that there will be no public displays of criticism of the Cubans in the human rights field, and took a jab at the United States when he said:

"There is no situation that seems like an emergency to us in Cuba. There are other situations of concern, including the situation in Guantánamo. There are very interesting areas that work with Cuba to improve human rights situation and the situation of vulnerable populations, such as Haitians. Thanks to the work of Cuban doctors in Haiti, the cholera epidemic was controlled."

Meanwhile, during the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, the Brazilian writer, Fernando Morais, commented on the promotion mass media has made about the blogger Yoani Sanchez: "On behalf of my convictions, I can not support a woman who has dedicated her life to fighting against the Revolution. I am a defender of freedom of expression. But first, I defend the right of 11 million Cubans who are being trampled by Americans,” said Morais.

The writer pointed out that in Cuba, there are no children begging in the streets, no illiteracy, no child malnutrition and the infant mortality rate is half that of the United States. "All that was conquered in spite of the embargo, which hinders the development of Cuba. The boycott began in the 60's and was reinforced in the 90's by the government of former President Bill Clinton, who belonged to the Democratic Party, in theory, leftist, in what might be considered left in the U.S. " The author added that the U.S. economic blockade imposed on Cuba is much more harmful than people often think. According to Morais, the Obama administration "did not change anything" in U.S. foreign policy, despite the expectations. / RHC
