Tobacco Plating Campaign Starts in Holguin

The 2017-2018 tobacco campaign began in the province of Holguín with the planting of some 900 hectares of the crop in the municipalities of Calixto García, Mayarí, Sagua de Tánamo and the head municipality.

Tobacco farmer Dixán Zúñiga, belonging to the Cooperativa de Creditos y Servicios (CCS) Frank País, located in the community of Las Calabazas, in "Calixto García" was chosen for the opening of this campaign in the territory, in recognition to the economic yields achieved by the 32 years old man.

Nivardo Ibarra, delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture in Holguín, acknowledged that the municipality of Calixto García is the one with the best results in the territory due to the commitment of the tobacco growers and the quality of the soils.

In the previous campaign this municipality achieved an agricultural yield of 2.3 tons per hectare; while Holguin achieved 1.83; Mayari 1,41 and Sagua of Tánamo 1,79.

"The damages caused by hurricane Irma to more than a thousand seedlings in the territory, will not prevent a good tobacco campaign," he added.

"For the stage, the hectares of land to be planted were increased in more than 218 in relation to the previous one and it is foreseen the plantation of 30 hectares of covered tobacco, four of them in Sagua de Tánamo, to obtain a tobacco layer of quality for export," said Raciel Aguilera, director of the TabaCuba Company in Holguin.

"The province has managed to place itself at the forefront of the country in terms of agricultural yields, and the municipality of Calixto García is without a doubt the best in the country in the cultivation of tobacco at direct sunlight in stick," he said.
