Holguín Benefits Studies on Hemophilia and other Bleeding Disorders

The Territorial Center for the study and treatment of hemophilia and other bleeding disorders in Holguín received a high-tech equipment that allows carrying out tests at the level of first-world countries, which shows the quality of medical services in Cuba despite the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on the island for 60 years.
Donated by the Novonordisk Haemophilia Foundation of Switzerland, the blood coagulometer benefits the provinces of Camagüey, Las Tunas and Holguín, the latter among the three Cuban locations with the highest incidence of cases, said Dr. Yenilet Escalona Vives, specialist in Hematology and responsible for the project in the eastern territory.
It also allows the development of platelet function studies, dosing of all coagulation factors, complete coagulogram, determination of thromboplastin and protamine sulfate test, Dr. Escalona added.
The implementation of the new equipment has benefited hundreds of people from these eastern territories of Cuba, who are examined and obtain the results in a single day, said the graduate Martha Moreno Serrano, principal specialist of the laboratory.
In the province of Holguín there are 13 hemophilic patients of pediatric age, 26 adults and about 400 coagulation disorders in general, commented Yenilet Escalona.
Previously, the patients were assisted with cryoprecipitates and fresh frozen plasma, running the risk of contracting hepatitis or the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), but at the moment the treatment is from concentrates of factors eight and nine, which has decreased the number of admissions and complications, explained the specialist.
The Center for the Study of Hemophilia, a genetic pathology that prevents the normal blood clotting, is located in the clinical laboratory of the Holguín Pediatric Hospital Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja, but with the magnitude of the research that the Coagulogrometer promotes, it is necessary to expand its premises, taking into account the territorial scope of it. / Aldia.cu
