Since September 11, the province of Holguin is immersed in the coffee harvest, which involves 63 productive forms and about 5,000 workers from the eastern Cuban territory.
The purpose for the current campaign is to reach 960 tons of gold coffee, to surpass the 911 tons collected in the previous harvest, which exceeded the plan for the period.
Jorge Gutierrez, head of the Department of Forestry, Wild Flora and Fauna, of the provincial delegation of Agriculture, explained that work is being done on the development of the Robusta variety, while grafts have been made with Arabica, because both species can lead to a strong plant, resistant to diseases and pests, and very productive.
The start of the coffee harvest took place at the Popular Council Naranjo Agrio, a community belonging to the municipality of Sagua de Tánamo, which stands out for its production of coffee.
This municipality concentrates almost 80 percent of Holguin's production, said Gutierrez.
"The current harvest will extend until January or February next year. Coffee is becoming a line of possibilities, since it updates its territorial program, in order to advance to 2030,” Gutierrez added.
