The comprehensive development plans of the Turquino Plan stand out among the achievements of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment in the province of Holguín, to celebrate the World Environment Day on June 5.
Geovanny Zaldívar Martínez, deputy delegate of that branch in the territory, told ACN that a reforestation program is being implemented in communities areas of Mayarí (Pueblo Nuevo de Pinares, Viveros Dos, La Mina), with a participatory approach to raise awareness about biodiversity protection.
He added that the management plans for the Sierra de Nipe and the Mensura-Piloto National Park also contribute to forest rehabilitation with species native to the community.
Zaldívar Martínez highlighted the measures to control sources of pollution, including the reuse of organic waste and the connection of 50 homes to the water and sewage systems.
This eastern province has local tourism and nickel companies nominated for the National Award for being free of ozone-depleting substances, as awel as the diagnosis of municipal watersheds and approval of new protected areas, he explained.
These achievements include the protection of beaches for tourism, the monitoring of over 200 pollution sources, the relocation of homes in coastal flood risk zones, and training on current environmental legislation.
As part of the celebrations for the World Environment Day, activities such as reforestation, educational talks, presentations, and visits to nature reserves are being held to emphasize the importance of caring for the environment in the province.
