The Haydeé Santamaría Cuadrado special school of Holguín is one of the existing in Cuba for the monitoring of children with Autism, where programs are promoted to benefit this population group.

The school, located in the modern area of this city, has a multidisciplinary team involved in the activities to promote social inclusion through discussions and teaching materials adapted to the characteristics of each child.

Yamila Garrido, Special Education methodologist, told ACN that family guidance is essential within these programs, as they must watch over the continuity of educational processes at home, which allows a greater development of the student's communication skills.

She added that this institution, with capacity for 200 students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, includes cultural and sports activities adapted to the characteristics of each patient, focused on greater socialization with the surrounding environment.

According to Garrido, strategies are coordinated with the aim to facilitate access to study, employment, culture, the development of practical skills and healthy recreation through the subsidiary of the Cuban Association of People with Intellectual Disabilities (ACPDI).

Danae Mouso, vice president of this organization, explained that the main objective is to influence social and government projects that guarantee a full life, with the participation of doctors and educators.

Autism Spectrum Disorder encompasses developmental disabilities caused by differences in the brain, often causing problems with communication, interaction, and restrictive or repetitive behaviors or interests. In Cuba there are specialized schools for their care in Havana, Santiago de Cuba and Holguín.

This eastern province has more than 20 thousand people with intellectual disabilities, who are monitored by the health system through primary and secondary care projects, aimed at their comprehensive rehabilitation, a sign of respect for human rights and social equality in the country since January 1959.
