An approach to poetry in the war through significant moments of Cuban historiography that were not told by historians, but by poets, opened the debates of the Congress of Thought “Memoria Nuestra”, backbone of the Romerías de Mayo festival taking place in the city of Holguín.

In his speech, the historian José Abreu Cardet, winner of the National History Award, explained that while historians must constantly appeal to a precise discourse with dates and places, writers can recreate details such as love for the family and the helplessness that it produces to the combatant the distance for his loved ones.

In this sense he referred to Virgilio Piñera, Regino Boti and Dulce María Loynaz, who portrayed society and various historical moments in their work.

For the naturalness and permanent accompaniment to the young people of the artistic vanguard, the organizers of the Memoria Nuestra conferred the Honor Award, the highest distinction granted to personalities or institutions with valuable contributions to Cuban culture.

The exhibition "Matria", by the renowned photographer Gabriel Dávalos, which comprises a set of snapshots dedicated to the dancers of the contemporary dance company Codanza, was another of the moments that marked the first day of Romerías, festival of tradition and modernity.

Tuesday’s agenda also included the screening of the documentary "Romerías la utopía"at the Ismaelillo movie-theater, while "Babel" opened the exhibition "Piel del toro", by Rafael Zarza, National Prize for Plastic Arts, who is for the first time participates in the event.

Dedicated to young art and the Saíz brothers, the Congress of Thought Memoria Nuestra will host until May 7 the presentation of investigations and sociocultural projects carried out by young researchers from Havana, Cienfuegos, Ciego de Ávila, Las Tunas, Granma, Santiago de Cuba and Holguín.
