The International Day of Girls and ICTs will be celebrated online on April 22 from Holguín with the participation of Internet users from various Cuban provinces.
This initiative arises for girls and young people to show their experiences in the use of technology in times of COVID, and to share what they have learned through presentations, audiovisuals or photographs.
Parents and teachers can also participate online to share their experiences in the pandemic period and their educational role in the use of technology in terms of curricular education and recreation.
About this celebration, the president of the UIC in the province, Carlos Parra, said to the local newspaper ¡ahora!
This is a little-known date, what are its origins and purposes?
The International Day of Girls in ICT was established in 2010 by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a United Nations organization specialized in telecommunications. Its objective is to encourage technological vocations in girls and young people and reduce the digital gender gap, also to encourage girls to participate in technological careers both in school and professional training, in leisure or other activities.
When did Cuba join this celebration?
For several years, Cuba has joined the Youth Club for Computing and Electronics and the UIC organizing events in schools, software development companies and the Youth Club. Girls of different ages participate in these events where drawing contests, slideshows or software solutions are carried out with computer platforms such as Scratch.
What will distinguish this year’s celebration?
Due to COVID-19 pandemic, the UIC looked for alternatives and created a videoconferencing platform, Jitsi Meet, free software installed in Cuba through the Union's servers at Etecsa.
It was the first public videoconferencing platform in the country, accessible on the national network consuming the 300 Mb offered by Etecsa for national navigation from mobile phones.
Through this platform we have been able to display important training actions and online events. The UIC-TV team in charge of organizing these events was integrated and a channel was created on picta.cu. Each event is recorded, edited and published on that channel to facilitate access by those who could not access the online contest.
