The Holguín Territorial Center for Attention to Infertile Couples achieved about 200 pregnancies through low complexity treatments in the first seven months of the year, despite facing resource limitations and in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This institution, attached to the Vladimir Ilich Lenin hospital and with coverage for the provinces of Camagüey to Guantanamo obtained about 40 more pregnancies compared to the same period in 2019, when they closed that year with 194.

Dr. Eloy Enrique Verdecia Silva, director of the Center, said that they have been affected by the economic blockade of the United States against Cuba, which has not allowed the purchase of supplies and some essential reagents in highly complex techniques -in fertilization vitro (IVF), very affected in this period.

The specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology pointed out that “all the resources we require to guarantee care for couples with conception problems come from first world countries. For example, culture media are imported from Switzerland, whose transportation to their final destination requires strict conditions in their packaging and stability in temperature, which must range between two and eight degrees Celsius”.

In the same way, he pointed out that the Ministry of Public Health acquires all the instruments, medicines and spendable material in freely convertible currency, which requires having a wide source of financing to cover the expenses, mainly of highly complex techniques.

This is one of the reasons for the medical staff to be more efficient in each treatment, because each cycle that does not reach pregnancy, in addition to suffering the couple, represents an economic loss of about 4 thousand dollars to the Cuban health system, not to patients whose care is totally free.

The doctor announced the acquisition of new technologies that will further modernize the Center and implement other assisted reproduction techniques, including intracytoplasmic sperm injection, to respond to the needs of the male factor.

Since its opening in mid-2009, the Territorial Center for Attention to Infertile Couples of Holguín has treated 37,748 couples with low-complexity treatments, of them with 2,181 artificial inseminations.
