BioCubaFarma, Cuban company in search of more effective treatments

The state-owned company BioCubaFarma has among its priorities the search and development of novel medicines that act differently from those already existing for the therapy of a certain disease.
Such commitment expands the options of achieving more effective treatments that improve the quality of life of the patients.
In the field of Biomedicine, the entity is currently undertaking 102 projects, and 75 of them are innovative with a Cuban patent, and approximately 25 percent of these are products in development, with the potential to become unique in their class.
Seven of them are in the early stages of clinical trials in therapeutic areas associated with the main causes of mortality in our country, said the director of Science and Innovation of BioCubaFarma, Rolando Perez.
In the area of Oncology we have the HerberSavax therapeutic vaccine, from the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, in phase III clinical trials in ovarian tumors and hepatocarcinoma, Perez pointed out.
The preliminary results of the phase I clinical trials, to assess the safety of the drug, showed evidence of reduction in tumor volume in some patients, something that is very encouraging, the expert said. / PL
