The health system in the province of Holguín gives priority to diabetic patient care programs, as this condition is one of the main causes of death in the eastern territory and is among the most common chronic non-communicable diseases.
Dr. Blas López, head of service at the Provincial Center for Comprehensive Care for Diabetic Patients, said that in that institution there is a room for day admission belonging to the V.I. Lenin hospital, which has benefited more than 50 thousand patients since its foundation 26 years ago.

He noted that the main purpose of the facility is the diabetes recovery, based on providing professional help to people debuting in this condition.

During their stay in the center, patients learn practical skills to live with diabetes, including healthy food, physical exercise and administration of treatment doses.

López said that the diet is essential in the control of the condition and helps to increase the life expectancy of the patients, a process that involves health specialists and family members.

About 12 specialties are involved in the attention to these patients, including neurology, ophthalmology, cardiology, nutrition and podiatry, which provide differentiated care, according to the characteristics of each of them.

Located in the Peralta district, specialists at the center also offer lectures to relatives of the patients aimed at promoting correct habits of life.

Diabetes is a chronic disease, characterized by a deficit in the secretion or action of insulin, which causes various complications in the kidneys, heart, retina, nerves and blood vessels, and is considered by the World Health Organization as a worldwide problem, according to the Cuban encyclopedia Ecured.

In Cuba there are more than 800 thousand patients diagnosed with diabetes, of which about 43 thousand reside in the province of Holguín, which reaffirms the importance of complying with the preventive actions and medical treatment.
