The Center for Research and Rehabilitation of Hereditary Ataxias Carlos J. Finlay (Cirah) won two prizes granted by the Academy of Sciences of Cuba (Acc) for the year 2018, with which add up to 14 achieved by this health institution.
 
The awards were granted to the MsC. Dennis Almaguer Gotay, who along with a group of authors conducted a study of oxidative stress and redox balance in patients with ataxia, and the research led by DCs Luis C. Velazquez Perez related to the evaluation of damage in the corticospinal tract in people with Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 2 (Sca2).

It was highlighted the importance of both researches in the identification of new biomarkers, clinical electrophysiological and neurochemical parameters that allow to evaluate the progression of the disease, even from very early stages, that is, before the individual develops the signs of Sca2.
 
In addition, they can be aspects to be evaluated in Clinical Trials or in therapeutic strategies. And in particular the research of DrCs Luis Velazquez, current president of the Acc and who for more than 15 years led the Cirah, deserved special praise for being the result of work developed with international cooperation, in this case with German universities.
 
Hereditary ataxias represent a health problem in Cuba, with greater emphasis in the province of Holguin, where more than 80 percent of the patients and relatives at risk are concentrated.
