The population of older adults increased in the province of Holguin at the end of 2018 with 216, 221 people in this age group, which represents 20, 8 of the total inhabitants of this Cuban eastern province.
This way, Holguin ranks ninth among the most aging provinces in the country, with one older adult for every four inhabitants, while it reduced the general mortality rate in older adults, mainly in the group of 60 to 74 years old.
The municipalities with the highest aging rate are Gibara (20.6); Banes (19.1) and Baguano (18.9) and, on the contrary, Moa has the youngest population in Cuba with (10.6), while the remaining municipalities have over 15.8.
The results achieved in this population respond to the actions undertaken to respond to the increase in senior citizens in this territory, which also have allowed to improve the quality of life.
The province currently has 1, 221 grandfather’s club with 101, 845 members and there are eight nursing homes with 680 beds and 18 grandparents' homes.
There are 899 daytime areas approved in that network of units, where besides medical assistance, senior citizens enjoy food and socialization activities.
Also, a care structure has been formed in two geriatric services in the provincial hospitals Lucía Íñiguez Landín and Vladimir Ilich Lenin with some 100 beds; Furthermore, in the municipalities there are dispositions for differentiated service to these patients.
