In 2024, the year of its 40th anniversary, the Family Doctor and Nurse Program in the province of Holguín worked to improve the Family Medicine project underway in the country, with the purpose of raising the quality of medical care and bring services closer to the population.

Dr. Minerva Lissabet, member of the General Directorate of Health in Holguín, explained that 2024 was decisive for the entire medical staff, nursing and other personnel involved in the Family Medicine program in this eastern territory, where “despite a period full of shortages of material resources and other contingencies, the reorganization of health benefits was promoted, so that they reach all the people and places in our geography."

“Specific priorities were analyzed, among them the Maternal and Child Care Program (Pami) had special follow-up due to its implication in the health and well-being of the pregnant woman, the mother and the child, as well as the medical emergencies, although no line or work project was neglected in order to achieve greater effectiveness in the actions at community level,” she explained.

Regarding Pami, she pointed out that a greater number of specialties were incorporated into the comprehensive consultation of adolescents, which resulted in better and comprehensive care for this population, since pregnancy at this stage of life is one of the main problems that the health system has been facing in recent times.

"We have tried to gain comprehensive care for young women, who are offered extensive advice with complete teams of specialists, which includes psychologists, social workers, ophthalmologists, dermatologists and stomatologists, among others, so that they consider the implications that pregnancy has at an early age of life,” she added.

Dr. Lissabet noted that work has been done in a differentiated manner with patients with chronic non-communicable diseases, in order to have greater control over people with hypertension, heart disease and others, with the aim of reducing mortality from this cause.

As a fundamental aspect, she pointed out the maintenance and renovation project carried out in 23 clinics and five polyclinics in 2024, actions that will continue in 2025.

“The Health Primary Care (APS) in 2025 has among its priorities to bring quality services to the population, address their concerns and respond to them, with humanism and professionalism, principles that will always characterize our doctors, nurses, technicians and other support staff of health institutions," she concluded.
