Young boy with a foreign body in the bronchus is saved in Holguín

A multidisciplinary team from the Octavio de la Concepción y de la Pedraja Pediatric Hospital in the province of Holguín today successfully extracted a pencil cap from the right bronchus of a 12-year-old adolescent.
In this occasion, Doctors performed a rigid bronchoscopy, which consists of introducing a tube-shaped device through the patient’s mouth under anesthesia to reach the trachea through the larynx and observing both bronchi, told ACN Dr. Alberto Ibarra Batista, specialist in Otorhinolaryngology.
The operation lasted about 20 minutes and with the help of tweezers it was removed the foreign body accidentally ingested by the patient, coming from the mining municipality of Moa, Ibarra added.
He explained that the bronchoscopy proceeded without complications and no injuries were found at the level of the bronchial tree, which was possible because the cap had holes and was able to ventilate, so the patient progressed favorably after the surgery.
Ibarra also reflected on the importance of keeping objects out of the reach of small children that may pose a danger to ingestion or aspiration and, in older children, explaining the risks of playing inappropriately with objects in the mouth.
This is the first surgery for a bronchial foreign body in the current year. During 2023, specialists from the Holguín pediatric hospital treated several children with ingestion of cloves, beans and corn grains with the favorable evolution of the patients.
