In the new facilities of the new Nephrology Service at the Lucía Íñiguez hospital of Holguín, specialists began to install catheters for hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis base on the conditions of the premise, which improves the quality of invasive procedures in patients with advanced kidney disease.

Dr. Lázaro Ibrian Cobiellas Carballo, head of the Interventional Nephrology area, explained that in the near future he plans to perform and repair fistulas in that cubicle, a safe space where procedures can be performed, without having to wait for an operating room.

The doctor pointed out that with the creation of the Department of Interventional Nephrology, the quality of the procedures is improved, while developing training capacities for other young specialists and residents of all dialysis centers in the province.

The beginning of this activity is the result of the preparation received by an important group of doctors during the First Cuban Interventional Nephrology Course in the country, held at this Holguín hospital last September.

In the event, participants achieved complete training, which allows them to be able to carry out risky procedures in a convincing manner.

Prior to that meeting, Dr. Lázaro Ibrian Cobiellas Carballo received advanced training at the Ignacio Chávez National Institute of Cardiology, in Mexico City, which authorized him to organize this training course, with the purpose of transmitting what he learned about interventional nephrology, such as the placement of tunneled catheter for hemodialysis and catheter for peritoneal dialysis, in addition to performing a percutaneous renal biopsy, all under ultrasonographic control, innovative techniques in the country.
