Nephrology specialists from Holguín and several Cuban provinces update the knowledge about this specialty during practical sessions included as part of the First Cuban Course in Interventional Nephrology.

Dr. Lázaro Cobiellas Carballo, who received advanced training at the Ignacio Chávez National Institute of Cardiology, in Mexico City, is the organizer of this course, with the purpose of transmitting what he has learned about interventional nephrology, such as tunneled catheter placement for hemodialysis and catheter for peritoneal dialysis, in addition to performing percutaneous renal biopsy, all under ultrasonographic control, innovative techniques in the country.

He said that for the first time this type of training is carried out in Cuba and has achieved a wide participation of professionals, among them from the Hermanos Ameijeiras hospital, while highlighting that the meeting has the support of the International Society of Nephrology, which granted funds to provide the assistance of the expert Juan Cristóbal Santacruz Mancheno, an Ecuadorian nephrologist, who participates in the practical sessions.

The doctor noted that this scientific activity will have a very positive impact on the health of patients, because nephrologists receive comprehensive preparation in very invasive and risky procedures, but they do it in the safest way possible, hence when they return to their respective dialysis centers will be able to perform interventional procedures convincingly and with fewer complications for patients.

This is a unique experience of its kind in Cuba, at the level of medicine practiced in developed countries. So this course is registered with the scientific endorsement of this society itself, as part of the Continuing Medical Education and Educational Ambassadors programs of the aforementioned scientific society.
