Health System in Holguín promotes exclusive breastfeeding

The health system in the province of Holguín promotes the exclusive breastfeeding among pregnant women, as part of the actions for the World Week dedicated to this event, which is celebrated every year in August.
In the eastern territory, actions are carried out at the 8 de marzo Maternity Home located in the capital city and the Vladimir Ilich Lenin Teaching University Hospital, awarded the status "Friend of Mother and Child”, which recognizes the efforts of the institution to promote this activity.
Dayamí Rodríguez García, a specialist in health promotion, told the ACN that this procedure is essential for the optimal development of newborns, for which reason its exclusivity is recommended up to six months of age.
Rodríguez García added that pregnant women are instructed on the appropriate positions for breastfeeding and the ingestion of foods that favor the practice, through educational talks and projection of audiovisual materials.
She highlighted that guidance meetings are also held throughout the year to address issues related to family planning and care for conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes mellitus, risk factors during pregnancy.
The health system in Holguín also carries out prevention actions to contribute to the reduction of adolescent pregnancy indicators and sexually transmitted infections, protection measures for vulnerable population groups.
The World Breastfeeding Week has among its objectives to promote laws that facilitate this practice in the workplace, financially reward working mothers and promote harmonious and responsible parenting, says the Pan American Health Organization.
