The flu vaccination campaign for pediatric ages began on July 3 in the province of Holguín, where a single dose of 0.5 ml will be applied to children from two to five years, 11 months and 29 days, as well as the first 0 .25 ml to infants from six months to one year.

This last group will be vaccinated again after an interval of four weeks, while those who have benefited from previous immunizations will be given a single 0.5 ml dose.

Dr. Rosa María Estéfano Rodríguez, responsible for the Acute Respiratory Infection and Tuberculosis Program in the province, explained that the campaign aims to prevent serious complications from this condition in groups of people at higher risk such as infants, asthmatic children and pregnant women, as well as the adult population aged 85 and over, including those in nursing homes, grandparents' homes and psycho-pedagogical centers.

Patients with chronic renal failure, infantile cerebral palsy and cystic fibrosis (children over six years of age) and those admitted to psychiatric institutions, will also receive a reactivation dose.

“Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a viral infection that attacks the respiratory tract. It is a seasonal disease, but it can be spread at any time of the year through contact with an infected person”, commented the specialist.

She added that “most patients who suffer from it can be cured quickly after two weeks; however, this condition should not be assumed lightly, especially in children and the elderly or with associated chronic pathologies”.

For this reason, she pointed out: "The best way to prevent influenza is to get vaccinated, because it reduces the risk of serious complications that usually lead to hospitalizations and even death."
