From April 10 to 14, the Medicine career at the Holguín University of Medical Sciences (UCMHo) will be submitted to an external evaluation process by the National Accreditation Board (JAN), which during those days will review compliance with the quality parameters expected to deserve that category.

On Monday, the highest political and governmental authorities of the province, as well as the Health system and the University students welcomed the team of experts from the JAN, who will visit until the next 14 teaching scenarios, among them: hospitals, polyclinics, doctor's offices and others, where the preparation of human resources is developed.

Prior to this reaccreditation process of the Medicine career, which currently has more than 3,500 students, the UCMHo carried out a program of work visits to provincial hospitals, with the purpose of verifying in situ the teaching-educational process and the preparation of these institutions and their professors, from constituting defining scenarios in the training of future professionals in the sector.

In 2014, this career achieved the Certified category, so there are conditions to ratify the category or achieve the qualification of Excellence, according to the assessment of Dr. Galina Galcerán, rector of the UCMHo, while Dr. George Velázquez Zúñiga, dean of the Mariana Grajales Faculty of Medical Sciences, recognized that in recent years the institution together with its faculty have worked in a timely manner in order to assume this external evaluation.

He assured that the results granted by the JAN constitute a national and international endorsement for this center, of high prestige and from which thousands of young people have graduated with their medical degrees, Cubans and foreign professionals.

The genesis of medical teaching in Holguín is with the inauguration of the Vladimir Ilich Lenin Provincial Hospital in 1965, and a few years later the Mariana Grajales Cuello Faculty of Medical Sciences was opened, which in 1978 started the first basic cycle with 85 students from the first year of the Medicine career.
