Cuba's Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) on Tuesday reported that 224 people had tested positive for the SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus that causes Covid-19.

Dr. Francisco Duran, national director of Epidemiology at the MINSAP, informed that all 18 Cuban laboratories processed 8,754 samples, so the country has accumulated 12,964 Covid-19 cases since March 2020.

Of all 224 new cases, 109 were infected by confirmed patients, 101 got the infection abroad and 14 people are being studied to learn about their source of contagion, Dr. Duran said at a televised press conference.

Currently, Cuba reports 1,761 active Covid-19 patients, including 1,739 who are clinically stable, while 14 people are in a serious condition and eight are in a critical state at intensive care units.

No deaths have been reported over the past 24 hours, and the death toll remains at 147. In addition, 199 patients were discharged from hospitals and more than 95% of patients have recovered from the disease, the expert commented.

Dr. Duran, the best-known face in Cuba in the fight against the new coronavirus, reflected on the importance of self-responsibility and risk perception, and assured that the country's health system has not collapsed.

He noted that the new strain of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus does not exist in Cuba, and explained that there are mutations of the virus, like the one found in the United Kingdom and South Africa, but no cases infected with the new strain have been reported in Cuba.

It is neither more harmful nor more lethal, it is just more contagious, it is transmitted very rapidly, Dr. Duran explained.
