The Territorial Oncology Center located in the city of Holguín has benefited more than 42 thousand patients from eastern Cuba in 2020, through external consultations and therapies to stop the advance of cancer in different locations, one of the main causes of death in Cuba.

Nitza Sanz, head of that institution based at the Vladimir Ilich Lenin hospital, said to the Cuban News Agency that the health facility prioritizes prevention and early diagnosis, not only in secondary care, but also in primary health care through the training of 17 medical professionals in order to reduce the number of people detected in advanced stages.

She highlighted that among the main treatments in patients with malignant neoplastic diseases it stands out surgical activity, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, although care continues throughout the entire clinical evolution, which also includes psychological guidance.

Sanz pointed out that as part of the actions to improve the quality of life of patients, within these procedures investigations are planned to contribute to the safety of radiation therapies, which also extends to the specialized staff.

She highlighted as one of the main achievements so far this year the application of hygienic-sanitary measures in the face of COVID-19, which made possible to maintain the services without outbreaks or sick people reported, among them patients highly vulnerable to the new coronavirus, she pointed out.

She added that the new normal establishes regulations such as attendance at the premises with a single companion, social distancing, the use of the face masks and disinfection with alcoholic solutions, guided by the Ministry of Public Health.

The Holguín Territorial Oncology Center was founded in 2011 and provides services to patients from the provinces of Granma and Las Tunas, with more than two thousand surgeries so far this year, despite the effects caused by the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba.
