The exhibition "My friend Alicia", by the outstanding Cuban artist of the plastic arts Nelson Domínguez, was opened last Friday at the Art Center of the city of Holguín, as a tribute to Prima Ballerina Assoluta Alicia Alonso, who passed away on Thursday, October 17, in Havana.
"It seems that the exhibition was conceived especially for the event, but it is not so, because it has already been displayed in eight Cuban provinces since last year," said artist, National Prize for Plastic Arts in 2009.
Born in the community of Baire, in Santiago de Cuba, Domínguez said that his affinity link with ballet and his friendship with Alicia Alonso came through his children, who also practiced this dance art.
About 60 pieces adorn the main hall of the cultural institution, among which stands out the last work done in Alicia's own house.
Paintings, drawings, prints, installations, furniture designs and bronze sculptures are some of Domínguez's proposals dedicated to the emblematic Cuban dancer, whom the artist recognized as a dance genius.
"Today is not a day of sadness, but of joy, because we are fortunate to have had this important figure of world dance among us," said the artist in the opening words of the exhibition, which will be opened for a month in Holguín.
The sample will travel to the provinces of Granma, Las Tunas, Matanzas, Pinar del Río and Isla de la Juventud.
