27th Celestino Prize begins in Holguín

The 27th Celestino Short Story Prize will take place in Holguín from June 9th to 12th, featuring literary gatherings, presentations, panels and the traditional award ceremony.
The activities will begin on Tuesday, June 9th, at the Ediciones La Luz publishing house, with a welcome address and the presentation of the jury, comprised of Cuban writers Laidi Fernández de Juan and Mariela Varona, and Argentine prose writer Kike Ferrari.
Activities also include the "Emergency Entrance" gathering, dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Hermanos Saíz Association (AHS) of young artists, with readings by writers Thalía Ricardo, Glenn Tamayo, Yeema Martínez, Milho García, and María Ramírez.
On Wednesday 10th, the panel “40 Years Without the Creator,” by intellectuals Manuel García Verdecia and Eugenio Marrón, will discuss on the life and work of the Argentine writerJ. L. Borges, to whom the event is dedicated. Also, the “Opening the Constellations” gathering, the play “The Visit,” and the debut work of Matanzas writer Alain Gómez Pérez, will be presented.
On Thursday 11th, the meeting “Ode to Young Light” will feature local writers Rubén Rodríguez and Robert Ráez, while in the afternoon, writer Mariela Varona will present the novel “The Day of the Holy Innocents” by Andrés Cabrera, in the Literary Café of the UNEAC.
The closing day will begin on Friday the 12th, at 10:00 a.m., with the "Emergency Entrance" event, featuring readings by renowned storytellers who have won various editions of the Calendario (narrative) and Celestino Short Story prizes: Rubén Rodríguez, Ghabriel Pérez, Rafael A. Inza, Robert Ráez, and Erian Peña.
At 11:00 a.m., the "Opening the Constellations" event will feature the presentation of the book "Morir un poco" (To Die a Little), by Andy Jorge Blanco, winner of the 25th edition of the competition.
The awards ceremony for the 27th Celestino Short Story Prize will include a diploma, a cash prize, the publication by La Luz in digital and print formats, and an art work donated by the heirs of the painter Cosme Proenza.
With this contest, born in 1999, whose name pays homage to the renowned novel "Celestino before dawn" by the Holguin writer Reynaldo Arenas, Ediciones La Luz promotes young literary creation and the legacy of the short story in Cuba.
