The Romerías de Mayo in Holguín were inaugurated in their 33rd edition with a call to preserve both the event and Fidel Castro’s ideas about the importance of culture.

Alexis Triana, founder and honorary president of the festival, emphasized to young people from Cuba and around the world that culture must always be the first thing to be safeguarded.

The event began with its traditional parade in front of the Provincial Museum La Periquera, featuring children and young artists from disciplines such as dance, music, and theater. This edition is dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Hermanos Saíz Association (AHS) and to Fidel’s cultural thought.

Triana highlighted that the Romerías are an essential part of Holguín’s identity, a project born over three decades ago through the efforts of young creators. He also noted that the festival represents the spirit of the city and its connection to culture, recalling the place where Fidel first addressed the people of Holguín.

Despite current challenges, such as energy limitations, the event continues with the same joy and vibrancy as in previous years. It brings together Cuban and international artists, including guests from Mexico, art students, researchers, and representatives of various cultural institutions.

The program includes a wide range of activities such as conferences, visual arts exhibitions, musical performances, and spaces dedicated to jazz and electronic music.
