Cuba rejects Dominican Republic’s expulsion of diplomats

The Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday strongly rejected the decision by the Dominican Republic government to expel 10 Cuban diplomats and their families from that country.
The statement released by the Ministry emphasized that there is no justification for the Dominican authorities’ decision and stressed that the Cuban officials have always acted in strict accordance with the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and with absolute respect for the laws of that nation.
It maintained, instead, that the action is a response to the “Dominican government’s submission to pressure from the U.S. government, which, in its efforts to isolate Cuba, has set out to damage our diplomatic relations with the countries of the region.”
The statement also noted that this is not the first time the Dominican government has aligned itself with the hostile policy and aggressive escalation of the United States against the island.
As evidence of this stance, it cited Cuba’s exclusion from the postponed 10th Summit of the Americas and the Dominican Republic’s change of vote on the Cuban resolution against the blockade in the UN General Assembly.
“With this latest act, the Dominican authorities are significantly damaging the ties between the two governments, but they will not be able to sever the deep and historical bonds existing between the Cuban and Dominican peoples, forged from the struggles of both countries for independence to the present day,” the Foreign Ministry stated.
It highlighted how illustrious Dominicans are intertwined with the history of Cuba and vice versa, and also emphasized that both peoples share cultural, economic, and solidarity ties that are inalienable.
“The Dominican people can always count on the unwavering friendship and solidarity of the Cuban people,” the statement concluded.
