The Calendario 2025 award, the highest recognition granted by the Hermanos Saiz Association (AHS) to young Cuban writers, was awarded in the narrative category to the Holguín writer Erian Peña Pupo for his book "That Summer in Woodstock."
Peña Pupo told ACN that the text comprises about 10 unpublished stories, which explore everyday stories focused on man and his circumstances.
He explained that the stories are long or short, without localist underlines and in places like Cuba, Chiapas, France or in places "open" to many possible countries.
Author of other works such as "Doors to flee from the house" (poetry, 2015, Ediciones Santiago), "Nomeolvides: (children's narrative, Ediciones Luminaria, 2021), "Words of exchange" (Ediciones Vigía, 2022) and "Hojarasca de las formas" (poetry, Ediciones La Luz, 2022), Peña Puño will also publish this year the work "Images in transit. The Cuban cinema of Eduardo Manet", by the publisher Fundación del Nuevo Cine.
On the other hand, writer Lorena Velázquez Fraga, winner of the Nuevas Voces 2024 Award granted by the AHS together with Ediciones La Luz as a promotion to emerging Cuban poets, received a mention in the poetry category.
The awards will be presented on February 19, as part of the 33rd edition of the Havana International Book Fair, where the titles awarded in the previous edition will also be presented.
These recognitions are co-sponsored by the Cuban Book Institute and the Casa Editora Abril, with the aim of promoting creation among young Cuban writers residing on the island, awarding a single prize per genre and the publication of the work in a collection sponsored by the AHS and the Casa Editora Abril.
