Starting in 2025, the Gibara International Film Festival will be called the Gibara International Low-Budget Film Festival, in accordance with the founding principles set forth by its founder, Humberto Solás, in his Low-Budget Film Manifesto.
During the closing gala, the director of the Festival, Sergio Benvenuto Solás, announced that the event will be held again in April, as in the first editions.
According to Cubacine, the people of Gibara never stopped calling it the Low-Budget Film Festival; this is a decision agreed upon by organizers, sponsoring institutions, and municipal and provincial authorities.
«The name change to simply the International Festival, which at the time also had its justification, will now be rectified, in a journey to the seed planted in 2003 with that spirit of defending a low-budget cinema, which is "poor in resources but rich in ideas" and in its aesthetic and humanistic value,» clarified the website of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry.
The next edition, which will be the nineteenth, will take place between Tuesday 15 and Saturday 19 April 2025, coinciding with the recess week, since traditionally students from the East of the country actively participate in the Festival, which has contributed to the development of the Villa Blanca de los Cangrejos.
This year, one of the novelties of FICGibara was the Low Budget Film Factory, which intends to remain in the coming years with the aim of «contributing to the expansion of audiovisual creation in the eastern region of the country, providing production aid to selected projects.» (Source: Granma)
