The mythical landscapes of Gibara were not the only ones that made Humberto Solás feel attracted, because beyond the architectural beauty of the Villa Blanca, the authenticity and simplicity of its people stands out.
This fishing village seems to live its own movie with each new edition of the Gibara International Film Festival. For this reason, it is not surprising to find new faces, protagonists of this 16th edition of the Festival, which will conclude on Saturday night.
“Happy to return to Holguín, the land of my father Fernando Hechavarría, and visiting Gibara has been a wonderful experience,” said the renowned actress Alicia Hechavarría.
Hechavarría commented to the ¡ahora! digital newspaper among the most emotional moments experienced in this edition, the screening of completely restored Cuban cinema classics, such as the film “Los survivors” by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, because that is the beauty of going back to the cinema: meeting again with that root that reminds us why we chose this path and today we are here defending the legacy of great masters.
“It is essential for an actor to participate in this type of event”, said the actor Denys Ramos and pointed out that his expectations for experiencing one of these festivals grew from the first editions of Cine Pobre while waiting for his opportunity: “now I see why when artists leave they say they are taking a little piece of Gibara's soul”.
For her part, Clara Roquet, a Spanish filmmaker, considers it a pride to have Libertad, her debut feature, in competition and pointed out that the Festival is an example of the positive impact of culture in the community.
Regarding her film, she pointed out that it deals with the story between female friendship and class difference, an autobiographical storyline and whose protagonist Libertad, played by the young Nicolle García, was found in auditions held by the team in the streets of Colombia, which enriched the work since it appropriated gestures, anecdotes and impressions that they would not have been able to find in a girl who grew up outside her native country.
Holguín artists also arrive for the first time at the popular concerts at Plaza Da Silva on the nights of the Gibara International Film Festival, such as singer-songwriter Norberto Leyva, who assured that it is a pleasure to sing in a space where all art expressions converge.
