The National Conference of Studies on Wars of Independence, the main theoretical space that promotes the XXXIX edition of the Holguín Culture Week began on Tuesday at its usual venue, the Calixto García Birthplace Museum.
The conference "The flames that illuminated Cuba", by the Granma historian Aldo Daniel Naranjo Tamayo, opened the event which on this occasion has the particularity that its work sessions, in which some 30 papers will be presented, combine face-to-face with the use of digital platforms for exchange with researchers from other Cuban provinces.
In his presentation, Naranjo Tamayo referred to the historical background that led to the fire in Bayamo on January 11, 1869, which was possible because most of the people in their different social, cultural and intellectual strata supported the independence cause.
He explained that the event, which was known in Cuba through the newspapers and ordinary correspondence, was not a casual or accidental event as the Spanish government wanted to make it appear, but rather it was a voluntary act of extraordinary sacrifice that responded to the decision of the majority of its inhabitants.
On Monday's session, were also discussed issues related to the construction of the image of the ten-year war in Cuba in the magazine "The Spanish and American Illustration", as well as other issues associated with the treatment of transcendental figures such as Calixto García and José Maceo, religious practice in the independence area, women's work in deeds and satire during the Spanish-Cuban-American War.
Activities planned for January 18 included talks on identity elements of the city of Holguín and its people, the day that marks the 270th anniversary since the town, founded between the Jigue and Marañón rivers, was given the Title of City and Tenure of Government.
On Tuesday, January 18, participants in the event reflected on "Culture, cultural policies and Revolution" in digital platforms, while the plastic arts will host the exhibits by local artists Andrés García and Dayamí Rodríguez.
