The project "Semilla" by the renowned Holguín sculptor Luis Silva is among the proposals exhibited at the XIV edition of the Havana Biennial, which takes place in Cuba until April 30, 2022.
Luis Silva said at a press conference that the proposal is part of the sociocultural project "Detrás del muro", which since 2012 aims at intervening with large-format works in the areas surrounding the Havana Malecón, a place from the where passersby will be able to enjoy Semilla, a granite rock weighing about 10 tons whose shape resembles grain.
"Semilla is recognition of my work and origins," Silva said and argued that the intention is to bring it as a symbol of hope in a song to his peasant roots.
He thanked the Provincial Council of Plastic Arts for the efforts made to bring his work to the public in the course of this week, which due to its format it needed great logistical support, since it was brought by Silva from the province of Santiago de Cuba.
The Havana Biennial was organized for the first time in 1984 by the Wilfredo Lam Contemporary Art Center, which since then has been in charge of the realization of this event as a space for confrontation and reflection of singular importance in the international artistic scene, with the purpose of contributing to the research, diffusion and recognition of the plastic arts of Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
