Holguín celebrates National Day "Read the History"

Holguín celebrates on these days the National Day "Read the History" with a wide program of activities that includes book presentations, panels and talks, among others.


Dedicated to the 63rd anniversary of the Triumph of the Cuban Revolution, 60th of the Literacy Campaign, 40th of the National Union of Cuban Historians and to the 123rd anniversary of the death of Major General Calixto García, the celebration will take place in museums, cultural centers, parks, schools and the University of Holguín.

The program highlights the approach on the value of written records and documentary files for historical memory, by historian Hiram Pérez Concepción, as well as the presentation of the book "Words to intellectuals", which collects the historical speech delivered by Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz on June 30, 1961, by researcher and anthropologist Alejandro Torres-Gómez de Cádiz Hernández.

Presentations of texts such as “Calixto García in the Great War”, by the historian Hernel Pérez Concepción; the panel "The perspectives and challenges of the history book in Holguín", with the professor and researcher Mayra San Miguel Aguilar, will have as guests representatives of the local publishing houses Ediciones Holguín, La Luz, Papiro and La Mezquita.

On the other hand, the titles "The men with the steel helmets and the Springfield rifles: Documents of the squadron 17 (Baracoa 1957-1958)", by the historians José Abreu Cardet, Marilú Uralde Cancio and Alejandro Hartman Matos, makes available to the reader a compilation of documents from a squad of the army of the Fulgencio Batista dictatorship.

As part of the celebration, tents have been located in the vicinity of the Calixto García park for the sale of books, in order to bring readers closer to works of literature that have history as their essence.

The event will conclude on Saturday 11th at La Periquera Provincial Museum with a tribute to Calixto García and books presented by La Mezquita publishing house.
