The Culture sector in the province of Holguín lost one of its most faithful sons victim of the COVID-19 pandemic, the outstanding artist José Antonio Salomón, president of the Cuban Association of Artisans Artists (ACAA) here for more than a decade.
Founder of the Movement of Artists for Life attached to this organization since 1996, closely linked since its emergence to institutions such as the Pediatric Hospital "Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja" and the homes for children without family protection.
In pandemic times, Salomón cooperated in the manufacture of masks, nasobucos, stretchers, carts for the transportation of food and medicines for hospitals and isolation centers, among other implements to face this dangerous disease.
There were not a few projects that he left along the way, including the restoration of its new headquarters, located in the central Frexes Street. He dreamed of becoming a place where people would appreciate the handicrafts made by local artists.
"We cannot let other cultures of the world take over our essence, let's look for a place to enjoy crafts and we will rescue a distinctive expression of national culture," Salomón said on one occasion.
Among his works, it stands out collections such as "The Tree of Life" to encourage the protection of the environment with the representation of insects and native birds of Cuba. In 20 years of intense artistic work he deserved the Iberoarte, Fiart and Unesco awards, and participated in international exhibitions in countries such as Mexico, Dominican Republic, Spain, Canada and United States.
