The Photographers Club and the Organizing Committee of the Romerías de Mayo in Holguín convene the FotoFest 2021 self-taught photography contest to be held from May 2 to 8 from digital platforms, as part of the 28th edition of that event that takes place in the fifth month of the year in the eastern city since 1994.
With the participation of about eight countries, this edition will focus the debates on the importance of photography in the protection and defense of animals, through exhibitions, talks, workshops and audiovisual exhibition, told the ACN Kevin Manuel Noya, member of the organizing committee of the contest.
The activities will take place from the virtual platform www.fotofest-holguín.com and its Facebook profile FotoFest International Photography Festival.
Cuban photographer Gabriel Guerra Bianchini, with his project “Tal vez ahora puedan vernos” (Maybe now they can see us), as well as collateral exhibitions such as "Galapagos Islands", a collaboration of several countries and the Photographic Project for the Protection of Animals, are among the special guests to the event.
Also the exhibitions "The Taxative Look", by the Italian Ángelo Selvaggi; “Manos de Apoyo”, by the Spanish Ela Rabasco; "Alternative Looks", a Cuban-Chilean project by Gonzalo Vidal; “Ten photos in quarantine”, by Jorge Ricardo Ramírez and “Bodies”, by Maité Fernández Barroso, these last two Cuban artists of the lens.
A Collateral Sample of the International Environmental Animal Film Festival of Mexico will also be presented, with the screening of the documentary " Toros sí, toreros no!", by the Mexican Zaizar Habacuc.
Photography will address the urgent need to have an international commitment to protect animals and their welfare needs, as well as respect for their rights, said Noya.
He explained that the contest was created from the joint work of the self-taught photographers Raiko Reynaldo Cuenca and Miroslava Gutiérrez, with their exhibition and itinerant community project “Sembrando arte en las comunidades” (Sowing art in the communities), in 2002; and in 2012 it was integrated into the activities of the Romerías de Mayo Festival.
Since then FotoFest has become a tool for transformation, reflection, social change and artistic confrontation, with outreach activities in Cuba and other countries such as Ecuador, Portugal, Spain, Italy and Switzerland.
It has also promoted the practice of art and technique for a decade, to obtain intelligent snapshots that have validated the Festival as a respectable choice within the national cultural sphere, he added.
