Jamaica and Cuba seek greater agricultural cooperation

Jamaica wants to strengthen ties with Cuba to further develop the local agricultural sector, the government of this Caribbean island reported here on Wednesday after an exchange on this subject.
Both countries might join efforts in research and development for the management of pests and weeds, as well as alternatives for animal feed and fertilizers, Minister of Agriculture, Pearnel Charles Jr, said.He said these are areas of interest because they have a direct impact on their ability to increase and improve production.
He added that they will be main topics as Jamaica is pushing forward its Grow Smart, Eat Smart strategy, and Cuba was encouraged to join.
Charles Jr. also said that another important area that can be improved is expertise for the repair of equipment used in agricultural operations.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to explore all viable options to boost agriculture and ultimately achieve food security.
Jamaica and Cuba have maintained friendly relations for the past 50 years, with thousands of students benefiting from Cuban training, including specialized training in the field of agriculture.
This nation, with almost three million inhabitants, has reiterated its gratitude to Cuba for cooperation in several areas, including health and education.
