The Food Production and Distribution Company (Numa) in Holguín is strengthening its collaboration with the agricultural sector to diversify the gastronomic offerings, reduce costs, and ensure the sustainability of the food industry in the region.
This strategy is carried out in coordination with the provincial delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture and focuses on identifying farmers whose production can benefit nearby processing units.
Working groups have been formed in the municipalities of Moa, Sagua de Tánamo, and Mayarí to identify demands and specific needs for supplies such as grains and root vegetables, aiming to meet them according to the productive capacity of local producers.
Thanks to these links, the marketing and distribution of products like pumpkin, cassava, millet, and vegetables have been facilitated, along with short-cycle crops obtained through contracts with specialized companies.
In addition to relationships with farmers, Numa also develops its own agricultural capabilities by managing more than 16 hectares of land distributed across three farms and an organoponic garden in the provincial capital.
The production includes sweet potato, cassava, beans, pumpkin, and corn, which are used as raw materials in food production, reducing the need to purchase external supplies and contributing to local provisioning.
The company also maintains gardens, plots, and covered beds near processing centers to make the most of available space, which are dedicated to growing vegetables and restoring medicinal plants such as anise and oregano, used in dehydrated products, demonstrating an efficient and sustainable use of agricultural resources.
This agricultural use for self-consumption aligns with Cuban government policies aimed at promoting local agriculture in every workplace and community, which fosters territorial self-sufficiency and strengthens the relationship between the food industry and the agricultural sector, benefiting both the local economy and the workers.
