The 20th edition of the International Low-Budget Film Festival began on Tuesday in the coastal city of gibara, Holguín province, with the screening of "Neurótica Anónima" (Anonymous Neurotic), by filmmakers Jorge Perugorría and Mirtha Ibarra.
The opening film, which is competing in the feature film fiction section, was selected to open the festival as a tribute to its director, who presided over the event for five years, Rafael Grillo, a member of the Organizing Committee, said to the ACN.
Sergio Benvenuto Solás, president of the Organizing Committee, explained that although the festival was initially postponed, it was decided to hold it in the summer to encourage greater participation from university students and young people.
The event, which will run until July 18, maintains the diversity and quality of its film program, despite the challenges of the current situation, and preserves the essence of its founder, the renowned Cuban filmmaker Humberto Solás.
Benvenuto Solás noted the resilience of this year's festival and announced that outdoor screenings will be enhanced on three screens distributed throughout Gibara, using a battery-powered system designed for a context where 24-hour electricity is unreliable.
"We want this festival to illuminate Gibara's nights, and although it won't be an event with large concerts, the film program maintains its usual standards and quality," the director stated.
As in previous years, there will be theater, music, and dance performances, as well as forums, including the panel "Factory of Poor Cinema: Challenges and Results of the Journey," and the launch of the Ibero-American Film Festival.
The Gibara International Low-Budget Film Festival, created in April 2003 by Humberto Solás, has established itself as one of the most valued events of alternative cinema in Latin America, by promoting creativity, cultural justice and low-budget audiovisual production. (Source: ACN)
