The anticipated victories of Romanian Irina Bulmaga and American Hans Niemann were confirmed on Thursday with the official closing of the 55th edition of the Capablanca in Memoriam international chess tournament, at the National Hotel of Cuba.
Bulmaga said goodbye with a draw against Poland's Oliwia Kiolbasa, but not even that half a unit was necessary for her to be the queen of the premier group called for 10 women and in which the Cuban women enjoyed the second and third places as the best performance.
The new champion completed 7.5 points and was escorted on the podium by Yerisbel Miranda with 5.5 units and the young Ineymig Hernandez, owner of five stripes in a performance that deserves highlighting.
With a similar accumulated five points, the national champion Yaniela Forgas went home, fourth place by tiebreaker, while the following places were distributed as follows: Lisandra Ordaz (CUB/4.5), Kiolbasa (4), Carolina Luján (ARG/4), Maritza (4), Deisy Cori (PER/3) and Yuleisy Hernández (CUB/2.5).
The crown of the Elite section had also been defined since the previous day, with Niemann as the beneficiary and his final score was set at 7.5 out of a possible nine.
In the most important segment of the competition, the locals did not have access to the podium, which was completed with the Azeri Vasif Durarbayli (5.5) and the Indian Surya Ganguly (5.5), in that order.
The best from home was Luis Ernesto Quesada's fourth place, another who added 5.5 units, but was not favored by the tie-breaker, despite beating Omar Almeida, also from Cuba, in the last round.
Argentina's Sandro Mareco was in fifth place with a quintet of units and ahead of Turkey's Mustafa Yilmaz (4.5).
Next were the remaining Cubans, Carlos Daniel Albornoz (7th /3.5), Isán Ortiz (8th /3), Omar (9th /2.5) and national champion Yasser Quesada (10th /2.5).
