Iran expects US historic defeat

Iran is expecting the historic defeat of the United States next Sunday, when the arms embargo on Tehran will expire despite Washington's efforts to extend it for the rest of this year.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saed Khatibzadeh noted that starting on Sunday, the Islamic Republic will be free to export and acquire conventional weapons.

That day marks the defeat of the White House, which failed to advance in its agenda to punish Iran, despite its intransigency, threats and illegal measures, the spokesman added.

The end of the embargo is expected to be a part of what is established in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) or nuclear deal, signed in 2015 by Iran and the 5+1 Group (United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia and China plus Germany).

By virtue of the agreement, Iran committed to limiting the projections of its peaceful nuclear program and in exchange it would benefit from the lifting of the global sanctions imposed by the United Nations in 2007.

Washington withdrew from the nuclear deal in May 2018 and imposed again the coercive measures that the JCPOA had eliminated.

Early this year, the United State submitted a draft resolution to the United Nations Security Council in order to extend the embargo that was contained in the nuclear deal, although it no longer belonged to that multilateral agreement.

Washington's draft bill was not approved at the UN Security Council, as only two of its 15 permanent or non-permanent members (the United States and the Dominican Republic) supported it.

According to the Iranian Government's perception, it was evident again that the United States is no longer the superpower it claims to be.
